Get to know Shobana
Shobana began her career in 2002 at Goldman Sachs International in London. She has spent over decade as an investment banker focused on capital investment and growth in the emerging markets (Africa, Asia, Russia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East). In 2011, she joined Standard Bank Plc as a Managing Director to head bespoke financing in Africa.
Shobana started a creative sabbatical in 2013, first in Silicon Valley working with fashion and fashion tech startups as a finance and strategy advisor. In 2014, she formalized her arts training by attaining a degree in Fashion and Textile design from the Parsons School of Design. She also holds a pattern making for production certificate from FIT in New York City. She built on her experience as a designer and textile artist at various ateliers in New York.
She is deeply involved in the thought leadership on sustainability in the fashion and garment sectors. She has provided advice to the United Nations on commercial and concessional financing for the garment sector in the emerging markets. She is currently in the process of launching a mission driven sustainable womenswear brand that is focused on textiles.
Shobana received her Master of Science from the London School of Economics in law and accounting/finance and a BA in international political economy from The George Washington University. She studied finance for one year at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and as undergraduate she also studied international affairs for one year at the London School of Economics. She is a Fellow of the inaugural class of the India Leadership Initiative and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network of the Aspen Institute.
