Paul C Brunson on Why the Differences You Try to Minimize are Your Greatest Asset
In the female-dominated world of matchmaking, relationship expert Paul C. Brunson is a bit of a unicorn, and he likes it that way.
Paul, who grew up in Jamaica, Queens, always wanted to be a businessman. Inspired by the rappers from his neighborhood, like Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent, he gravitated towards entrepreneurship and saw how smart business people utilized media to speak to their audience directly and grow their endeavors.
Following his childhood dream, Paul began his career in finance as an investment banker and equity analyst, getting his CFA and brokerage license and later getting a business degree from Georgetown University. Basically, he was a baller. In fact, he was working for a billionaire in charge of his U.S. assets when Paul spotted the opportunity of a lifetime.
You see, in addition to being a hustler, Paul has always been a helper, (he jokes he’s Jamaican and has to have at least 10 jobs at all time) and in addition to his successful finance career, he had created an educational non-profit to help tutor kids in the DC area where he lived at the time.
One summer he noticed that nearly none of the kids enrolled in his summer camp came from households who had two parents living at home, and many lived with grandma’s and aunties as primary caretakers. Discussing this with his then new wife, he joked they should be matchmakers! It was said in jest, but the idea of matchmaking stayed with him.
The ever-entrepreneurial Paul—who signed up to go to a matchmaking conference with the hopes of licensing an idea—sat in the back room filled with 250 of world top matchmakers...
And he noticed something big.
Paul recalls looking around the room and not seeing one man, one person under 40, and no people of color besides himself. Recognizing instantly that he had a unique skill set, he thought to himself: “I don’t want to sell the idea, I want to be the idea.”
You see as a black man under 40 in the white, female dominated world of matchmaking, Paul knew two things:
- That he was different
- And that difference was valuable.
“We can look at what makes us different and try to minimize that,” says Paul, but instead we should embrace and harness all our distinct gifts and life experiences.
This idea of monetizing your uniqueness ended up being the backbone of the personal branding strategy he developed—a strategy that enabled him to climb the ladder from matchmaker hopeful to columnist, to acclaimed author, to TV host and thought leader in his industry.
